Ubuntu – Remove PPA via the Command Line

Identify PPAs on your Ubuntu install via the command line

  • Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T)
  • cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
  • ls -l

You have move into the directory where the PPA lists are stored (/etc/apt/sources.list.d/) and should have a list of the PPA installed. You can open the individual .list entries to identify the PPA address with vim/nano/gedit.

Removing an Old PPA

There is a handy program called ppa-purge that will remove the PPAs from your sytem and return it to its origianl state.

  • sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

ppa-purge can be used by entering the ppa that you wish to purge much like you add a ppa with add-apt-repository. If you can not remember the PPA address then you can check it by opening the list file using the steps above.

  • sudo ppa-purge ppa:<PPA>

This will remove all traces of the PPA and reinstall any packages that may have been updated with the original versions.

MVC and the joys of new Technology..

MVC-AVC is the codec used for Interlaced 3D Blu-ray films.. it allows for stereoscopic video via one stream. Unfortunately I can not currently find a way to cost effectively encode to this format at this time, leaving the only option (for my current HTPC setup) to encode 3D Blu-rays to half SBS :(

SBS encoding work on the principle that you squash the right and left eye picture into the same frame size as the original, orientated from left to right or top to bottom. either way this hurts a little for a videophile.

Generally this is an issue with being up to date with technology, all the good stuff comes later.. like FullHD3D interlaced .mkv so you don't need to compromise. I should stop complaining and learn how to code it myself and if time allowed I would!

Walls done!

Well, I finally have no more wall painting to do, aside from touch up jobs and some wood work the lounge has been finished. Really looking forward to getting it set up with the new TV (Samsung UE40D6530), the MediaPortal powered HTPC that is under construction and getting the piano tuned :D

Will be having a couple of entries regarding the set up of MediaPortal 1.2 beta for XDVA playback of MKV and the like with the AMD E350 APU, quite amazing as a pure HTPC chip, unfortunately no 3D support but I will go in the goods and bads another time!

Quite a few posts planned on various things that have been keeping me sane over the last few months, as although the flat and the OU studies have been consuming my life, my mind has been wondering about all sorts of fun things :D

New house turning into a new home

Man its been a long time, we have been in the process of doing up our new place since Christmas and we have almost finished!!
Wednesday the 6th is the deadline and we are looking good for finishing at the weekend... this mean all sorts of goodness to come.

Last weekend was the first time I have been able to play Starcraft 2 properly in a ages, for season 2 i have been undeservingly placed in Gold and with my 2 victories from 11 I am currently sat in the top 40 for the league.. only problem being that I am going up against high Bronze and loosing, I look forward to my demotion :P

Although not high level, it has been rather enjoyable having a little time to play. This extra time is also becoming apparent as I have time to type this and with the house finished it looks like i will have some pesonal time between the studies and work to relax again .. that is the driving force to finish as soon as possible, although my nature will not let me until everything is ready XD

Merry Christmas!

So I'm sitting here in Glasgow airport waiting for my delayed flight to board, finally having a moment to update the blog and think about what I would like to do with inzanik.com.

First off, I need to start posting! As the Cataclysm beta is no more and even during the beta I had little or no time to blog. This was mainly due to a new job and additional RL commitments.. things can get busy quickly ;)

I will be posting more, discussing my thoughts on gaming in general as well as my exploits in to Java/Android/Linux development and anything that grabs my eye from a tech perspective.

Then when I gain a little more incite to what I would like to play with I will develop the site as needed. From the perspective of the blog I would like to fine tune my plugins, then the look and feel of the blog, whilst I fill it with some (hopefully) good content!

............................................

I ran out of time before my flight and my the place in Italy has limited connections to the outside world. After having the best Christmas Dinner of my life, I would just like to say, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
